We made the trek a couple of weekends ago to Rockfield Park in Bel Air. This is a hike from our house in Halethorpe—a good 45 minutes, depending on traffic. But it was worth the drive.

Oliver at Rockfield Park

We’ve noticed that the playgrounds and parks north of the city tend to be more rustic but just as thoughtfully designed as the imagination playgrounds in the greater DC area. Rockfield Park, in addition to featuring the castles and giant swingsets that we’ve come to appreciate at many of the nicer playgrounds in central Maryland, also included a big sandbox (with a slide into the sandbox, no less) and an interesting water feature that allowed kids to pump from a small well and direct or redirect the flow of water (basically, a miniature dam project).

And he’s off!

Thoughtful detail on the castle

The playground was part of a much larger park (with multiple entrances; you want the entrance adjacent to the private school rather than the sports fields) in a quaint part of town. If you’re feeling ambitious, the Lyn Stacie Getz Creative Playground is just a few miles away.
